Bitter Melon & Summer Fruit Smoothie

smoothie Drinks

During the hot summer days here in Japan, I love making simple, refreshing drinks using whatever fresh fruits and vegetables I have at home. One of my favorites is this bitter melon (goya) and summer fruit smoothie. Goya has a naturally bitter taste, but when you blend it with sweet watermelon and fresh orange, the flavors balance each other surprisingly well. The result is refreshing, fruity, and just a little bit unique.

Ingredients
Bitter melon (goya), seeds removed and sliced
Fresh orange, peeled and cut into pieces
Watermelon, cut into chunks
Ice cubes, optional
A little water or coconut water, if needed

How I Make It

First, I wash the bitter melon, cut it in half, and remove the seeds and the white part inside. Then I slice it into small pieces. I put the bitter melon, orange, and watermelon into my blender and blend everything until smooth. If it’s too thick, I add a little water or coconut water. You can also add some ice if you want it extra cold and refreshing.

That’s it! Nothing complicated—just blend and enjoy.

My Little Tip

If you’re trying bitter melon for the first time, start with just a small amount. You can always add more later. I usually add plenty of watermelon and orange because their natural sweetness helps mellow the bitterness of the goya.

I especially enjoy this smoothie on a warm afternoon. It’s a simple way to enjoy fresh summer produce, and sometimes the unusual combinations turn out to be the most delicious ones! 🍉🍊
